Edit count requirement

Hey. Does the minimum of 500 edits criteria include contributions to foreign-language Wikipedia or just the English version? Just curious. OscarL 05:15, 22 September 2015 (UTC)

It includes all Wikimedia projects. Nikkimaria (talk) 11:33, 22 September 2015 (UTC)

As my wiki account expired would you review my edits of thr Covino and Rich show project? Joshinwinnipeg (talk) 19:27, 1 December 2016 (UTC)

Live

Nikkimaria just curious, have we gone live with this yet? I got my approval on the 8th of October and responded the same day, but have gotten nothing further. Last time I had an e-mail glitch, so thought I'd better check. Thank you! SusunW (talk) 14:52, 17 October 2015 (UTC)

Hi SusunW, not yet, but we're hoping to get the logins sent out within the next week. Nikkimaria (talk) 14:57, 17 October 2015 (UTC)
Great, Nikkimaria and thank you for the quick response. SusunW (talk) 14:59, 17 October 2015 (UTC)
I've received an email from them, but I can't login despite entering the correct username & password...Also, the email says that the "grand total" is 149.95 dollars. We're supposed to ignore that, right? :o OscarL 07:03, 24 October 2015 (UTC)
Yes, ignore that bit. But if you're having trouble with your login unfortunately you'll have to get in touch with their tech-support folks, as we don't have access to their system. Nikkimaria (talk) 17:04, 24 October 2015 (UTC)
Hi Nikkimaria, I was one of the earliest to get an approval, and I responded to the email asap. However, I haven't received any further details. Thanks. --Peaceworld 21:48, 30 October 2015 (UTC)
Hi Peaceworld, according to my records you should have received a login directly from Newspaperarchive - check your spam folder, and if there's nothing there I can follow up with them on Monday. Nikkimaria (talk) 00:09, 31 October 2015 (UTC)
Nikkimaria did we go live with this? Your message to Peaceworld111 seems to say that they are sending logins, but I have never received anything. I have checked my spam folder both on the web directly and through my outlook receiver but have nothing. SusunW (talk) 00:23, 31 October 2015 (UTC)
@SusunW: My understanding was that the first batch of logins (covering everyone who had completed the form by 19 October) had been sent out, but I will follow up with this on Monday. Nikkimaria (talk) 00:43, 31 October 2015 (UTC)
Nikkimaria Thank you. Sometimes its just a Mexico thing, and sometimes its my e-mail. It's why I always check. Your help is much appreciated. SusunW (talk) 00:44, 31 October 2015 (UTC)
Nikkimaria I've checked my spam folder and there is nothing there. Thanks.--Peaceworld 11:48, 31 October 2015 (UTC)
Likewise, I have not received anything from them. Imzadi 1979 -> 19:27, 31 October 2015 (UTC)
Hello Nikkimaria, just noticed your last post here. I applied on 22nd Sept, approved on 9th Oct and haven't received it yet. Would much appreciate if you could take a look into it when you can. Thank you. --WikiBronze [T] 01:13, 1 November 2015 (UTC)

@All: Apologies for the delay, I had thought the first round had gone out but based on the responses here this would not seem to be the case. I will follow up with Newspaperarchive on Monday and hopefully get logins sent out ASAP. Nikkimaria (talk) 01:30, 1 November 2015 (UTC)

@All: Newspaperarchive.com has sent me a list of logins for everyone they've processed so far - I will be sending these out by email shortly. This includes everyone who filled out the form before 28 October. If you don't receive it please let me know. If you haven't filled out the form yet, please do so as soon as possible. Nikkimaria (talk) 16:48, 2 November 2015 (UTC)
Nikkimaria you ROCK! I am in already :) SusunW (talk) 17:10, 2 November 2015 (UTC)
Thanks, I've got mine - and it's already yielding some good results! --Bruce1eetalk 05:07, 3 November 2015 (UTC)
Thanks Nikkimaria, I got mine on 2nd of November, as well. --WikiBronze [T] 18:19, 4 November 2015 (UTC)

Clipping requests

I'd like to request clippings of the following newspaper articles, hence being able to create links to them on certain wiki pages.

http://newspaperarchive.com/us/indiana/goshen/goshen-daily-democrat/1916/11-02/page-2: article "Mechanician Dies of Burns" (2nd column); requested title of clipping (the link inside the brackets should be included): Death of race car mechanician Ralph Hitlich (see https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/N3H2-G8S)

http://newspaperarchive.com/us/new-york/syracuse/syracuse-herald/1931/09-13: article "Jimmy Gleason, Crack Racing Driver, Killed, 8 Hurt in Fair Race Crash" (columns 4 to 7) / http://newspaperarchive.com/us/new-york/syracuse/syracuse-herald/1931/09-13/page-6: several articles and picture (columns 1 to 6); requested title of both clippings: Death of race car driver Jimmy Gleason in qualifying for Syracuse 100 AAA race on September 12, 1931

http://newspaperarchive.com/us/indiana/hammond/hammond-times/1934/05-29/page-16: article "Spying on Sports" and picture (columns 7 and 8); requested title of clipping: Death of race car driver Peter Kreis in practice for Indianapolis 500 AAA race on May 25, 1934

http://newspaperarchive.com/us/new-york/syracuse/syracuse-herald-journal/1989/06-12/page-75: article "Veteran driver Druar killed at Lancaster" (columns 3 to 5); requested title of clipping: Death of race car driver Tommy Druar in 40-lap Lancaster, NY NASCAR Modified race on June 10, 1989

Requirements

In addition to the stated requirements users need either Flash (for the jpeg version) or Adobe Acrobat (for the PDF version). If, like me, you don't (and won't) have flash, and use a different PDF viewer, then Newspaperarchive.com isn't for you.

It also surprised me that the Newspaperarchive.com account was set up with my real name rather than my wiki name. I've never mixed my wiki persona with the real world. I'm not going to mix them by creating clippings with my real name attached. Bazj (talk) 12:01, 19 December 2015 (UTC)

@Bazj:, I respect your desire to maintain your real name for real life. However, your assumptions are not correct.
1) My newspapers.com account setup asked for my real name, true, but my Newspapers.com Profile shows only my preferred Wikipidia handle.
2) Additionally, it is not the case that Adobe Acrobat is required for the PDF version of the clippings feature: I downloaded this clipping and it opens fine with the free PDF-Xchange Viewer application I prefer (allows bookmarking, offers OCR). It also opens fine with the open source SumatraPDF viewer. PDF is a standard file format: any compliant PDF reader should work. -- Paulscrawl (talk) 16:55, 19 December 2015 (UTC)
Paulscrawl, I think you may be confusing WP:Newspapers.com with WP:Newspaperarchive.com, though your point about alternate PDF viewers is correct. Bazj, I believe you should be able to edit your displayed name through the "My Account" settings; if this is not the case, let me know and I can get in touch with customer support to ask them to change it for you. How-to for making clippings?

I read the main article on which I'm commenting, but in the section on clippings, it merely suggests that we make them, without explaining HOW. I examined all the items in the NewspaperArchive toolbar but didn't see anything that referenced clipping. Is this feature possibly not available when we view in JPG form? (I was having trouble getting articles to materialize promptly using PDF, so I switched to JPG viewer, and now it's not offering me the ability to switch back.) Lawikitejana (talk) 09:14, 14 April 2016 (UTC) P.S. If/when you reply, please mention it on my user talk page so that I'll know.

@Lawikitejana: Open any article and in the toolbar look for scissor icon that be should be fourth from left. For a brief tutorial click here. Anupmehra -Let's talk! 14:05, 15 April 2016 (UTC)

100 article limit?

Well, for some reason, I have run out of page views on Newspaperarchive as of last night, which is a major inconvenience. There is nothing on the website talking about the 100 page limit I was given. Is there an error somewhere? Mitch32(I can have oodles of charm when I want to.) 15:01, 12 May 2016 (UTC)

@Mitchazenia: I don't know the answer but I've emailed our contact person at NewspaperArchive and asked him about limits. I'll let you know what I find out. HazelAB (talk) 20:31, 12 May 2016 (UTC)
@Mitchazenia: NewspaperArchive has replied. They say: "To guard against scrapers or malicious users we limit accounts to 100 images per 24 hours." HazelAB (talk) 20:37, 12 May 2016 (UTC)
Per 24 hours? Mine has been a 100 limit through the last 6 or 7 months. I'm not going that fast through them. Mitch32(I can have oodles of charm when I want to.) 21:44, 12 May 2016 (UTC)

Account problem

Am being told I can't save anything from Newspaperarchive-PNG or PDF because I don't have a paid account. Not understanding this as I received my confirmation email on November 2 2015. The only change I've made on my account there was to remove my real name from being publicly displayed. Would appreciate some help with this since I can't use it for citations, etc. as it stands now. We hope (talk) 14:36, 30 June 2016 (UTC)

@We hope: I'll have to pass this on to NewspaperArchive customer service. Just a couple questions first: How long have you been unable to save anything? Are you able to access their content at all? HazelAB (talk) 18:37, 30 June 2016 (UTC)
I'm able to clip, search and read but not to make a copy of a story and download. I get a message that I need to become a paying member in order to do that. I hadn't used the account in a while so I'm not sure when the problem began. Thanks! We hope (talk) 18:44, 30 June 2016 (UTC)

Can't access the articles

My sign-in just arrived via email. I can access and search newspaperarchive.com, but it won't let me open any of the search results. Same problem on both browsers I used, Firefox and IE. So, it's not browser specific. When I click on any search result, it goes to another screen,, and then that spinning thing in the middle of the page...spins...and spins...and spins...5 minutes, however long I'm willing to watch it spin. But it never shows the article. Please advise. -- Maile (talk) 20:39, 4 August 2016 (UTC)

Must have been a glitch on their end. Now it's working fine. -- Maile (talk) 21:11, 4 August 2016 (UTC)
On second thought, it's not working fine. One pulled up fine, but the rest just hang on that spinning thing. No explanation of why. -- Maile (talk) 21:17, 4 August 2016 (UTC)
@Maile66: I have just sent your original query to our contact at NewspaperArchive.com. HazelAB (talk) 21:23, 4 August 2016 (UTC)
@Maile66: They say (and I quote) "The developers broke our website. Scrambling to get it fixed." So... try again later! HazelAB (talk) 21:27, 4 August 2016 (UTC)
Oh, thank you! -- Maile (talk) 21:34, 4 August 2016 (UTC)
  • HazelAB Sigh..now I have another question. Same issue on both Firefox and IE. They fixed the broken site about a day after you last posted above. Now they have the visual "tools" splattered around the screen. There's a top row of tools icons, which is fine. But there's also icons on the side margins that obscure part of the text, that I can't make go away. One on the right-hand side is more than an icon. It's a rather large not-too-transparent thumbnail of any article I pull up. On my screen, it's about 2" x 4", so that I can't read any text that happens to fall behind that area. And it won't let me move the page around enough to get it out from behind that annoying inset. How do I turn all this stuff off? It doesn't matter what search I've done, or the results, just that inset that can't be removed. -- Maile (talk) 22:48, 10 August 2016 (UTC)
@Maile66: I don't have a NewspaperArchive account myself but logged in to take a look. What you describe sounds like a new "feature" rather than an access issue. I see what you mean about the thumbnail! I noticed a Report Problem icon at the top of the screen. That would be my suggestion this point. I looked for some information about how to use the resource, but didn't notice any. HazelAB (talk) 12:28, 11 August 2016 (UTC)
HazelAB Thank you. I emailed them. Either they fixed it, or I figured it out. There's something in the toolbar that looks like a ship's wheel. It says "show navigator". Apparently, that thumbnail that blocks so much of the screen is the navigator, so I clicked it off. -- Maile (talk) 18:12, 11 August 2016 (UTC)

Clipping permanence

The project page says "Clippings ... remain permanently open access, even when user accounts expire." In my experience this is not true. I let my Wikipedia Library access to newspaperarchive.com lapse last year. In December another editor pointed out that a clipping I had saved and cited now results in a 404 file-not-found error. The problem is not a temporary one, and affects every clipping I made, for example, from 1970 Bhola cyclone:

  • Zeitlin, Arnold (December 11, 1970). "The Day The Cyclone Came To East Pakistan". Stars and Stripes (European ed.). Darmstadt, Hesse. Associated Press. pp. 14-15. Retrieved April 15, 2007.

--Worldbruce (talk) 19:08, 8 March 2017 (UTC)

FWIW, my subscription expired in October 2016. I can still sign in and my clippings are still accessible, but I can't seem to get my subscription renewed. I applied for renewal almost 2 months ago and still haven't gotten a renewal. I recently re-applied for an account-will be happy to take either of these as I can't clip anything as the account presently stands.
I see an article in this paper by the author on that day but the article title seems to have changed. Not sure if you're able to view the link or not; sorry, but I can't clip so can't clip it for you. We hope (talk) 21:32, 8 March 2017 (UTC)

Awaiting?

What's a good amount of time to wait for my account to come through? I completed the initial form on 15 February 2017 - that's over seven weeks ago. Just asking. Regards. The joy of all things (talk) 20:37, 7 April 2017 (UTC)
